    BURRTON — The Burrton High School boys’ basketball team was seeded last in its five-team Class 1A, Division I sub-state, but the Chargers went through the four seed, the one seed and finally the three seed, knocking off Heart of the Plains League rival Fairfield 60-48 Saturday in the finals.?Trae Lane led the Chargers with 31 points. Nathan Harper added 10.?Burrton trailed early — 17-13 after the first quarter and 31-29 at the half.?Burrton came back with a 14-5 run in the third quarter. The Chargers hit 11 of 13 free throws in the final quarter to preserve the win.?Fairfield, which ends the season 12-11, was led by John Dealy with 12 points and Brennyn Pankratz with 11.?Burrton is 10-13 and opens Class 1A, Division I state play at 6:30 p.m. Saturday against top-seeded St. John-Hudson.

    ABILENE — The state hopes for the Hesston High School boys’ basketball team were dashed by host Abilene 70-33 Saturday in the Class 4A sub-state finals in Abilene.?The Cowboys, 19-4, advance to the state tournament, which begins this week in Salina.?Abilene took control of the game early, leading 17-6 after the first quarter and 38-15 at the half.?Andy Wilson led Abilene with 20 points, followed by Jacob Harms with 13 and Matthew Barlow with 12.?Ryan Schadler led Hesston with 13 points. Tyler McCartney added 10.?Hesston, which ends the season 20-3, loses four seniors.

    ABILENE — The Hesston High School girls’ basketball team was outscored by McPherson 22-13 in the second half, falling 35-26 in the finals of the Class 4A sub-state tournament in Abilene.?McPherson, the defending Class 4A state champions, improve to 19-3. Hesston ends the season 20-3.?The Swathers trailed 7-4 after the first quarter, but tied the game 13-13 at the half. Hesston trailed by three after the third quarter, but McPherson was able to pull away in the fourth.?Katelyn Loecker led McPherson with 18 points. Abby Pedersen added 10.?Caylee Richardson, Ashley Weaver, Cami Richardson and Kelsey Unruh scored six points each for Hesston.?The Swathers lose four seniors.

    HESSTON — The Hesston College women’s basketball team opened NJCAA Division II, Region VI post-season play with an 80-70 win over Kansas City (Kan.) Community College Saturday at Yost Center.?The Larks, 15-15, face top-seeded and top-ranked Johnson County Community College at 6 p.m. today in Overland Park.?The finals are at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hartman Arena.?Hesston led 36-34 at the half, pulling away in the second half.?Destiva Davis led Hesston with 23 points. Nikkita Lester added 13 points. Kelli Christianson and Makayla Ladwig each added 10 points.?Kansas City, 10-21, was led by Jherica Montgomery with 24 points and 15 rebounds. Alexandria Blaurock scored 13 points. Mariah Marusak added 10 points.
