WHAT IT IS: The city of Newton's 2013 budget for the engineering division of the department of public works. The budget is up slightly from the 2012 adopted budget of $434,633 and the 2011 budget of $399,490.

DEPARTMENT STATS: The engineering department is in charge of designing, constructing and maintaining city infrastructure. It also implements building, housing and environmental codes and maintains city-owned buildings. In 2012, the department conducted an estimated 1,100 commercial building inspections and 900 residential building inspections.

BUDGET BREAKOUT: Some of the line items in the department's 2013 budget are:?- Personal services: $392,047 (the department has the equivalent of 10 full-time staff members and one part-time staff member; positions include city engineer/director of public works, building and zoning administrator, building inspectors and an environmental control officer)?- Contractual services: $17,100?- Commodities and supplies: $6,765?- Vehicle operating: $7,100?- Transfers: $21,333

2013 OBJECTIVES: Goals for this year include providing administrative and engineering support for building the improvement projects related to water, sewer, streets, rail, etc. at the Kansas Logistics Park; working to comply with stricter Environmental Protection Agency and Kansas Department of Health and Environment rules and regulations; and performing building inspections on new projects.
