  • HESSTON — The Hesston High School girls’ basketball team opened the post-season with a 60-20 win over Central Kansas League rival Smoky Valley Tuesday in Hesston.?The 19-2 Swathers advance to the semifinals Friday in Abilene.?“We played them 10 or 11 days ago,” Hesston coach Matt Richardson said. “We didn’t come ready to play and they took it to us. Today, we came out much more focused. We did a better job of passing on offense. We were very unselfish. It was our last home game and our kids wanted to go out strong.”?Caylee Richardson led the Swathers with 16 points, followed by Cami Richardson with 14.?Smoky Valley, 2-19, was led by Maddie Klotzbach and Carrie Albers with four points each.?Hesston finished the game 22 of 42 shooting.?“When you get good looks, you are going to shoot the ball pretty well,” Matt Richardson said. “We’ve been shooting the ball well all year long. It’s because we make that one extra pass to get the ball to the open girl.”?Smoky Valley opened the scoring with a layup, but Hesston came back with the next 13 points. Aided by 11 Viking turnovers, Hesston led 15-4 at the end of the quarter. A 23-2 Hesston run in the second quarter put the Swathers up 38-6 at the half.?Smoky Valley reached double digits in scoring with 5:55 remaining in the third quarter. Hesston led 52-18 at the end of the period. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock. Both teams used their benches in the final period.?Hesston faces host Abilene Friday. Abilene is 12-9 after a 54-48 win over Buhler.?“We haven’t played them in a couple of years,” Matt Richardson said. “They started out the year very well. The competition they played in recent weeks has been pretty tough. They beat Smoky early in the year. We just need to play with the same intensity we did tonight. I feel like we’ve played with a lot of focus since two or three games after the mid-season tournament.”
