HAYS — The Halstead Dragon wrestlers have a state champion, while the Sedgwick Cardinals have a state runner up after two days of competition at the Class 3-2-1A state championships at Bush-Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.?Halstead senior Alex Thibault won the title at 152 pounds. Sedgwick’s Nic Johnson finished second at 145 pounds. The two are teammates in the regular season as Sedgwick and Halstead are a co-op team that only separate for regional and state competition.?In the team standings, Halstead tied for 26th while Sedgwick was 31th. There were 75 teams in competition.?Norton won the team title, followed by Hoxie, Plainville, Scott City and Atchison County.?Thibault opened the day in the semifinals, downing Kade Brown of Oberlin in 58 seconds. In the finals, Thibault drew Regis Weiss of Russell, posting a 7-3 decision for the title and ending the season 46-1.?Johnson opened the day with a 4-1 decision over Cody Ellis of Norton in the semifinals. In the finals, Johnson faced Tagen Lambotte of Rossville, dropping a 20-8 major decision. Johnson ends the season 36-7.
