LINCOLN, Neb. — The Bethel College women’s tennis team opened the season with a pair of losses Saturday at the Knight Fieldhouse in Lincoln.?Bethel lost to NCAA Division II William Jewell 8-1 and 24th-ranked (NAIA) Nebraska Wesleyan 5-4. Bethel entered the meet ranked 20th.?The sole double winner of the day for the Threshers was freshman Bree Honer at first singles.?“This was a disappointing weekend for us,” Bethel coach Lonnie Isaac said. “We competed hard as a team, but the loss to Nebraska Wesleyan was really tough because we know we left some opportunities out on the court. We only have so many opportunities to play nationally-ranked competition because of the area we play in and a limited budget to travel so we just don’t get a lot of these chances. That said we did have some very good individual moments.?“Bree played solid at no. 1 singles all day and the win over (Kristen) Stivers of William Jewel should hopefully help her national profile. Steph (Shogren) and Miranda (Weaver) had a great come-from-behind win against Nebraska Wesleyan to stake us to a 2-1 lead in that match after Madelyn (Weaver) and Allie (Hipp) had already won convincingly at third doubles. In singles we won the first set in four of the six matches, but it just wasn’t our day. I am still really proud of all the women for how they competed in a tough environment.”?Bethel’s match scheduled for Wednesday at Southern Nazarene was postponed because of the weather. Bethel hosts Oklahoma Baptist at 3 p.m. March 1. The OBU women are ranked 16th.
