  • WICHITA — The Newton High School boys’ bowling team won its first league title in school history, although one it will have to share.?Newton placed fourth Friday at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I Championships at Seneca Bowl in Wichita.?When regular-season results were factored in, the Railers finished in a four-way tie with Campus, Derby and Maize. Newton led the league coming into the tournament.?Maize finished atop Friday’s competition at 2,422, followed by Campus at 2,387, Derby at 2,344 and Newton at 2,329. Hutchinson was fifth at 2,125. Hutchinson finished fifth overall as well.?Sean Carman of Campus had the high series of the tournament at 641, followed by Madison Cook of Maize at 634 and Justin Ash of Derby at 629.?Newton was led by Austin Gronau in sixth at 619, Bryan Esau in 11th at 590 and Jerod Ashcraft at 14th at 570.?Cook had the high game of 263, followed by Nick Barringer of Hutchinson at 254 and Tim Bevier of Derby at 248. Newton’s high game was 223. Gronau bowled two 223 games. Esau had one.?In the girls’ competition, Campus won at 2,428, followed by Derby at 2,345, Maize at 2,225, Newton at 2,119 and Hutchinson at 1,922.?In the overall team standings, Campus finished first, followed by Derby, Maize, Newton and Hutchinson.?Emily Dull of Campus had the high series of 649, followed by Shelby Harms of Hutchinson at 645 and Alyssa Magee of Campus at 630. Newton was led by Melina Schrader in fifth at 611 and McKenzie Senn in eighth at 544.?Shanna Madden of Campus had the high game of 253, followed by Harms at 247 and Rachael Bannon of Derby at 245. Senn had Newton’s high game of 235. Schrader had a 226 and a 224.?Newton competes Saturday at the Class 5-4-3-2-1A Regionals at the Walnut Bowl in Great Bend. The girls compete at 10 a.m., followed by the boys at 12:30 p.m. The top two teams and top six bowlers not on the top two teams advance to state Feb. 28 at Northrock Lanes in Wichita.
