  •  SALINA — The Newton Wrestling Club competed Saturday at the Salina Tournament of Champions. The tournament drew about 2,000 competitors, making it one of the largest open youth tournaments in the state. Newton had four wrestlers finish in the top six. Logan Treaster finished second in the 14 and under, 100-pound division, finishing 2-1. In the semifinals, he downed All-American Gage Harmon of Blue Springs, Mo., 5-3, posting a takedown in the closing seconds. In the finals, he lost to Tyler Flood of Louisberg 4-2. “Although he dropped a close one in the finals, it was a huge win for Logan to beat Harmon,” said NWC coach Matt Treaster, also Logan’s father. Grant Treaster took third in the 10 and under, 70-pound class at 5-1. There were 37 wrestlers in his bracket. He lost in the semifinals to Maxx Mayfield of Meneely, Neb., the Nebraska state champion. He beat Lou Fincher of Lawrence in the consolation finals. “Grant had a good day and wrestled very consistent,” Matt Treaster said. “He is wrestling very solid right now.” Keon Edwards finished fourth in the 6 and under, 55-pound class at 3-2. Edwards lost in the consolation finals to Antonio Robinson of the Wichita Wrestling Club. “Keon made a big stride today in placing in a tough bracket,” Matt Treaster said. Cyle Gaitchi placed sixth in the 12 and under, 165-pound class. He lost in the fifth-place match to Tristan Geddes of Nickerson. “Cyle wrestled well on the day and lost his match for fifth and sixth in a nail bitter,” Matt Treaster said. Also competing were Karsten Wall, Bobby Southern, Zion Younts, Jonah Remsberg, Jett Brackeen, Gaige Llamas, Boone Roberson, Sawyer Mock, Josh Edson, Trevor Waldrop, Malachi Holmes, Gavin Cusick, Kaden Davis, Bryan Cusick, Wyatt Hendrickson, Colby Beer, Brody Roberson and Sid Simmons. “All in all I was pleased with the way the boys wrestled,” added Treaster. “Our intensity had been lacking the last couple of competitions, but we had a good week of practice and the kids wrestled well all day. Although we didn’t have a big number of kids finish in the top six, we had six additional wrestlers finish just one match out of the medals. We will get there for state.” Newton hosts its tournament Feb. 9 at Ravenscroft Gym.
