  • Newton Invitational Consolation finals Andover Central 53, Bishop Carroll 44
    The Andover Central Jaguars held off several Bishop Carroll comeback attempts to claim a 53-44 win Saturday in the consolation finals of the Newton Invitational Tournament. Central, 9-4, made runs at the beginning of each quarter, only to see Carroll rally in all but the fourth. Megan Stamp led Central with 18 points. Skyler Snodgrass scored 14. Shelby Lopez scored 12 points for Carroll, 7-5. Kayla Demel added 11. Central jumped out 13-0 in the first 5 1/2 minutes of play. Carroll had five turnovers in the run. The Eagles didn’t score a turnover until the 1:41 mark of the first quarter. The Carroll bench was hit with a technical foul at the end of the quarter. Central hit one of the two free throws to lead 18-7 at half. Central made a 5-0 run to start the second quarter. The Jaguars went cold from the field the rest of the way and Carroll started hitting shots. A Hannah Schauf trey at the buzzer got the Eagles within six, 27-21. In the first four minutes of the third quarter, Central hit a 3-point shot and Carroll hit three of four free throws. Central led by nine late in the period, but Carroll got back within five, 35-30, at the end of the quarter. Central opened the fourth quarter with a Snodgrass trey. A Brooke Pedersen layup with 2:13 in regulation put Central back up by 10.

    Seventh place Garden City 51, Goddard 37
    The Garden City Buffaloes posted its first win of the 37th Newton Invitational with a 51-27 win over Goddard Saturday in the seventh-place game. Garden City improves to 11-3, while Goddard falls to 1-11. Taryn Temple led Garden City with 15 points, followed by Johna McClelland with 14 points and Jaymie Bernbeck with 12. Goddard was led by Emily Rausch with 11 points, the first double-figure scorer for the Lions in the tournament. The two teams combined for four of 20 shooting in the first quarter as Garden City took a 6-2 lead. Goddard had seven turnovers in the period. Garden City scored the first 11 points of the second quarter. Goddard was able to stay in the game the rest of the half from the free throw line, trailing 24-13 at intermission. The Buffaloes were able to extend their lead to 14 at the end of the third quarter. Goddard was held without a field goal in the fourth quarter.
