    Top-seeded and top-ranked (KBCA, Class 5A) Kapaun-Mt. Carmel downed Goddard 64-30 Thursday in the opening game of the 37th Newton Invitational at Ravenscroft Gym. Kapaun led 19-4 after the first quarter and 42-14 at the half. Goddard made a run to start the third quarter, but Kapaun was able to pull away in the fourth. Sam Bachrodt led Kapaun, 10-0, with 17 points. Molly McAuliffe scored 15 points and Sydney Kuhn scored 10 points. Goddard, 1-9, was led by Brianna Fuchs with nine points and Jessica Gardiner with seven.

    Olathe Northwest advanced to the semifinals after a 61-39 win over Andover Central in the quarterfinals of the 37th Newton Invitational Thursday at Ravenscroft Gym. Northwest takes on top-seeded Kapaun-Mt. Carmel at 6:30 p.m. today in the semifinals. Andover Central takes on Ark Valley-Chishom Trail League Division I rival Goddard at 3 p.m. in the consolation semifinals. Tied 6-6, Northwest ended the quarter on a 12-0 run. The Ravens added two more points to the run in the second quarter. Northwest led 32-18 at the half. Kelsey Brooks led Northwest with 20 points. Jaylah Jackson added 10. Skyler Snodgrass led Central with 14 points.

    The Bishop Miege Stags held off a late comeback by Garden City for a 48-44 win Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 37th Newton Invitational at Ravenscroft Gym. Miege outscored Garden City 24-0 from 3-point range. Garden City outscored Meige 20-8 from the free throe line. Lexie Hughes led 9-3 Miege with 19 points. Kelsie Wolf added 12 points. The two combined to hit seven 3-pointers. Garden City, 10-2, was led by Jaymie Bernbeck with 13 points. Taryn Temple added nine. Miege jumped out to a 7-1 lead and led 17-9 at the end of the quarter. Garden City got back in the game with a 5-0 run to open the second quarter. Miege replied with an 11-0 run. Miege led 31-19 at the half. Garden City missed several chances to cut its deficit into single digits in the third quarter, trailing by 10, 39-29, at the end of the period. The Buffaloes opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run. After a Miege time out, Miege came back with a Iland Shurn layup, followed by one of two Hughes free throws. A pair of Jacksenie Tornero free throws drew Garden City within three with 1:57 remaining in regulation. Tionna McKee hit a pair of free throws with 36.4 seconds remaining to get Garden City within two. The Buffs then forced a turnover, but missed a layup. Bishop Miege missed the front end of a one-and-bonus, but Garden City turned the ball over with 10.2 seconds remaining. Miege advances to the semifinals at 8:15 p.m. today. Garden City plays in the consolation semifinals at 4:45 p.m.
