    The Olathe Northwest Ravens return to the finals of the Newton Invitational for the third straight year with a 40-37 win over previously unbeaten Kapaun-Mt. Carmel Friday at Ravenscroft Gym. Kapaun, 10-1, is ranked first in the Class 5A coaches poll and the defending Class 5A state champion. Northwest is the defending NIT champion, ranked fifth in Class 6A and the defending Class 6A runner-up. Kelsey Brooks scored 19 points for Northwest, 9-3. Shaleia Jamison added nine points. For Kapaun, Sydney Kuhn scored 14 points, followed by Hannah Lienhard with 10. Northwest was 14 of 25 from the line, while Kapaun was seven of 19. Kapaun opened with a 5-4 lead, ending the quarter on a 12-3 run. Northwest regrouped in the second quarter with a 10-2 run of its own, trailing 19-17 at the half. After a close third quarter, Northwest pulled away to lead 28-27 at the end of the period. Tied 34-34 with 1:33 remaining in the fourth quarter, Brooks hit a layup, followed by two free throws. Brooks hit two free throws with 6.4 seconds remaining to seal the win. Lienhard hit a trey at the buzzer for Kapaun. Northwest plays in the championship game at 4:30 p.m. today. Kapaun plays at 3 p.m. for third place.

    Consolation semifinals Bishop Carroll 54, Garden City 46
    Bishop Carroll outscored Garden City 22-13 in the fourth quarter to claim a 54-46 win Friday in the consolation semifinals of the Newton Invitational. Carroll, 7-4, plays Andover Central at 1:30 p.m. today. Garden City, 10-3, plays Goddard at noon for seventh place. Garden City jumped out 11-0. Trailing 16-3, Carroll ended the period on an 8-0 run. Garden City scored the first five points of the second quarter, but Carroll ended the half on a 10-4 run to trail by four, 25-21, at the half. Carroll took its first lead with a 7-0 run to open the third quarter. Garden City rallied back to take a 33-32 lead at the end of the quarter. Bishop Carroll made a run to start the fourth quarter and put the game away at the free throw line. Kayla Demel led Carroll with 19 points, followed by Shelby Lopez with 13 and Brooklyn Bockover with 11. Taryn Temple scored 14 points for Garden City, followed by Jaymie Bernbeck with 12.

    The Andover Central Jaguars jumped out to a big lead early and cruised to a 56-24 win over Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division II rival Goddard Friday in the consolation semifinals of the 37th Newton Invitational. Central jumped out to a 14-1 lead and led 18-3 at the end of the first quarter. Goddard opened the second quarter with a 6-2 run to pull within 11. Central ended the quarter on a 14-2 run to lead 34-11 at the half. Goddard continued to pull away in the second half. Evan Stamp led Central with 15 points, followed by Skyler Snodgrass with 14. Jessica Gardiner led Goddard with eight points. Andover Central, 8-4, plays in the consolation finals at 1:30 p.m. today. Goddard, 1-10, plays at noon in the seventh-place game.
