  • The Newton High School wrestling team cam through Thursday, downing a short-handed Maize squad 50-24 in an Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I dual meet at Ravenscroft Gym. Only 10 of 14 matches were wrestled, giving Newton 24 of its 50 points. Maize and Newton split the other 10 matches 5-5, but the Railers outscored Maize 26-24, winning three by fall, one by technical fall and one by decision. Maize won three by fall and two by decision. “Both teams are battling some injuries,” Newton coach Jude Wilson said. “The kids we put out did some good things. I feel pretty good about the way our guys went out and wrestled.” Newton improves to 6-0 in duals meets, 3-0 in AV-CTL I duals. Newton opened the day with Trevor Pryor posting a technical fall in the second period over Maize’s Faden Reneau at 106 pounds. Eliseo Torres of Newton followed with a third-period pin over Monte Stoner at 113 pounds. At 126 pounds, Quinton Harrison was tied against Maize’s Brett Moon 1-1 at the end of regulation. Neither wrestler scored in overtime. Harrion was ridden out in the first tie-break period and gave up and early escape in the second tie-break period, but Harrison scored the takedown with two seconds remaining for the 3-2 win. At 120 pounds, Newton’s Andrew Gehring fell to Jake Wilgers by fall in the second period. At 132 pounds, Newton’s Earnest Johns dropped a 6-2 decision to Fernando Nuno. At 138 pounds, Brennan Barger of Newton was pinned in the first period by Kyle Baldwin in the first period. At 145 pounds, Newton’s Robert Loeffler was pinned in the second period by Josh Owings. At 152 pounds, Newton’s John Jurado was decisioned 5-2 by Chad Gloudeman. Maize was open at 170, 195, 215 and heavyweight, giving forfeit wins to Newton wrestlers Jared Langley, Dillon Archer, Raymond Gallegos and Garrett Lee. Newton competes today at the Blue Valley Northwest Invitational. “We start wrestling at 4 in the afternoon, so we’ll get a little more rest,” Wilson said. “Manhattan will be there again. A lot of Kansas City-area schools that we don’t get to see will be there. The things we’ve been working on this week have been getting off our shots and finishing our shots. We’ve been working on the bottom, getting to our feel. Just little things we’ve been picking at.”
