  • The Newton High School wrestling team sent two to the finals of the 50th Newton Invitational Tournament of Champions Friday at Ravenscorft Gym.
    After the first day of competition, Newton is in fourth place out of 27 teams. Newton has 11 of 14 wrestlers still in competition.
    “We were hoping for a little bit more,” Newton coach Jude Wilson said. “We could have got more, we could have got less. It was a typical day at the TOC. We’ve got some kids who can score points from the backside. There’s a lot of wrestling left out there and a lot of points left to be scored.”
    Grand Island (Neb.) leads the field with 177 points, followed by Arkansas City at 139, Garden City at 108, Newton at 103.5 and Colby at 95.5.
    Newton was 5-4 in the first round with five wrestlers receiving byes. Newton went 7-2 in the second round and 4-3 in the quarterfinals. Newton was 2-2 in the semifinals.
    At 170 pounds, Jared Langley won a match by decision and a match by fall to reach the quarterfinals. He was the first Railer to meet a Grand Island wrestler in the tournament, taking a 6-0 lead through two periods against Jose Cabellos. Langley added an escape and a takedown in the third, along with a penalty point, en route to a 10-2 major decision.
    In the semifials, Langley faced Joseph Monrroy of Emporia. Langley scored a takedown in the first period, a takedown in the second and an escape in the third for a 5-0 decision.

    At 195 pounds, Dillon Archer received a bye and posted a second-round pin. Against Tommy Marquez of Bishop Carroll in the quarterfinals, Archer jumped out 4-1 in the first period, scoring the pin late in the second period.
    Against Seth Presek of Gardner-Edgerton in the semifinals, Archer scored a pin in 26 seconds.
    Archer, 17-0, meets 25-2 Chase Reis of Grand Island in the finals.
    At 220 pounds, Raymond Gallegos posted two pins in the first two rounds. In the quarterfinals, Gallegos took a 5-0 lead in the second period against Anthony Gonzalez of Fredonia, adding five more points in the third for a 10-1 major decision.
    In the semifinals, Gallegos met Edgar Silva of Grand Island. After a scoreless first period, Gallegos gave up an escape and a takedown in the second. Gallegos scored a reversal in the third period, but couldn’t get any more points, falling 3-2.
    At heavyweight, Garrett Lee posted pins in his first two matches. In the quarterfinals, he faced Montana Fuller of Garden City, posting a pin midway in the first period.
    Page 2 of 3 - In the semifinals, Lee was tied with Matt McGrew of Arkansas City 1-1 early in the third period. McGrew countered a Lee shot for a takedown with 27 seconds left in regulation. Lee escaped, but couldn’t get the takedown, falling 3-2.
    Lee and Gallegos compete today in the consolation semifinals. Both have clinched a medal.
    At 126 pounds, Quinton Harrison won his first two matches by fall. In the quarterfinals against Ben Lightfoot of Andover Central, Harrison rode Lightfoot out in the second period and scored an escape early in the third to take a 1-0 lead. Lightfoot scored a takedown late in the match for a 2-1 win.
    At 132 pounds, Anthony Monarez won a match by fall and another by technical fall. Against Kevin Kissane of Maize South, Monarez took an 8-3 lead through the first two periods. Kissane scored eight takedowns in the third to tie the match 11-11. Kissane then posted the takedown in overtime for the win.
    At 160 pounds, Heydon Mock got a bye and scored a 2-1 win in the second tie-breaker round. In the quarterfinals, Mock faced top-seeded and top-ranked (Class 6A) Dustin Williams of Gardner-Edgerton. Mock gave up three takedowns and back points in the first period, and was pinned early in the second.
    Harrison, Monarez, Mock advance to the fourth consolation round today, needing a win to clinch a medal.
    Finishing 1-1 were Eliseo Torres at 113 pounds, Peter Nelson at 152 pounds and Noah Ornelas at 182 pounds. All three advance to the third consolation round.
    Finishing 0-2 were Trveor Pryor at 106 pounds, Andrew Gehring at 120 pounds, Eanest Johns at 138 pounds.
    The tournament continues at 9 a.m. today. The finals are scheduled at 6 p.m.
