The Newton High School bowling teams opened the season with a pair of wins over Hutchinson and Wichita Northwest Tuesday in a triangular at Play-Mor Lanes.?The Railers boys rolled a 2,282, followed by Northwest at 2,044 and Hutchinson at 1,783. The Railer girls rolled a 1,935, followed by Northwest at 1,863 and Hutchinson at 1,629.?The Railers claimed top series for both the girls and the boys.?Senior Bryan Esau led the boys with a 709, followed by teammate Austin Gronau at 519. Anthony Rodriguez of Northwest rolled a 512. Esau rolled the top two games of 276, his third game of the day, and 226. His first game was a 207. Gronau had the third high game of 208, his final game of the day.?I was a little nervous, Gronau said. I pulled it out. I was hoping my teammates would do a little bit better. They still did decent. Hopefully we can win the meet. I knew we were down a little bit. I just tried to roll my best. I set a new high score for myself.?Esau said bowled on a Wednesday night league in the off-season.?Id like to make it as a team to state, Esau said. If not, have a couple of individuals make to state, girls and guys.?The Railer girls were led by senior McKenzie Senn with a 646. Hayley Hawks of Northwest had the second high series of 522, followed by Shelby Harms of Hutchinson at 511. Senn had games of 219, 210 and 217, the three high games of the meet.?I was really surprised how I did, Senn said. Ive never been that lucky before. Id only had two games over 200. I dont know what got into me. I tried not to think about it. I tried to stay calm and relaxed.?Senn competed at state last year.?Hopefully, Ill make it to state again, she said. Id like to place at AV-CTL.?I was pretty pleased with how we started, Newton coach Keith Woolery said. Bryan really stepped up today. I dont know if he had any open frames. McKenzie Senn finished strong last year, going to state. She had a great start to this season. It was a really strong showing for the girls. That score will win a lot of meets for the girls. The boys bowled better in some practices, but it was good enough for today. I have really high expectations for them. Both teams had a really strong finish.?Newton competes at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Augusta.?JUNIOR VARSITY Both the Newton boys and girls junior varsity teams finished second. Northwest won both meets and Hutchinson took third. Andrew Rikoff led the Railer boys with a 433 series and a 182 game. Kami Bostick led the Newton girls with a 443 series and a 159 game.?On the girls, we have a lot of young bowlers who are improving every day, Woolery said.
