Justin Rohrberg received an extra special birthday gift this year.
His daughter, Jaia Grace, was born on his birthday at 3:52 a.m. Jan. 1, 2013, at Newton Medical Center. Jaia is Justin and his wife Jessica's first child, and she also was the first baby born at Newton Medical Center in the new year.
The Rohrbergs live in Valley Center but chose to have their baby at NMC due to personal connections to the hospital. Justin and Jessica are physical therapists, and while they currently work at Premier Physical Therapy in Wichita, they both used to work at NMC. Their doctors also are at NMC.
"It's just nice to have the smaller hospital feel," Jessica said. "... The nurses and doctors have all been really good."
Jaia arrived one day early, making her a "New Years" baby. Coincidentally, the Rohrbergs have a cousin who just missed having a New Years baby, since the baby was born on Dec. 31.
The Rohrbergs chose the name "Jaia" for their daughter because they liked its meaning: "victorious."
"We wanted it to start with a 'J,' since both of our names started with 'J,'" Justin said.
Justin and Jessica were scheduled to take their daughter home Jan. 2, and will have family to help them out as they adjust to the new addition to their household.
They thanked NMC for the care they received, and for the gift basket NMC gives to the first baby of the new year.
"Everything's been great," Justin said.
