HALSTEAD — The news spread through Halstead schools like wildfire — bad news often does.
A toddler killed in a Maize traffic accident Thursday afternoon was the child of first-year basketball coach Derek Schutte.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we will support them in whatever way we can," said Thomas J. Alstrom, superintendent of Halstead USD 440.
The accident, which involved an oil tanker truck and a minivan, happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of 53rd St. N. and 119th St. W in Maize
Officials say a 3-year-old boy who was in the minivan was taken to a local hospital and died a short time later. The boy was properly restrained, but still ejected in his car seat due to the force of the impact. Another child, a 9-month-old girl, was also seriously hurt. Their mother suffered injuries not considered life-threatening.
The driver of the truck was not hurt.
