WHAT IT IS: The city of Newton's 2013 budget for the city-county airport. The budget is down slightly from the 2012 adopted budget of $1.55 million. The 2011 budget was $1.52 million, and the 2010 budget was $1.51 million.
DEPARTMENT STATS: The Newton City-County airport is on approximately 800 acres two miles east of Newton. Originally constructed as an auxiliary flight training facility for the U.S. Navy, the airport was converted to a municipal facility following World War II. The airport now is jointly owned by the city of Newton and Harvey County.
The airport has two runways that can accommodate corporate business jets, multi-engine aircraft, and single-engine aircraft. Companies such as Hawker-Beechcraft, Wells Fargo, Avcon Industries and Hesston College regularly use the facility.
BUDGET BREAKOUT: Some of the line items in the department's 2013 budget are: - Personal services: $350,176 (the department has the equivalent of five full-time staff members; same rates for 2012). - Contractual services: $153,650 - Commodities and supplies: $533,050 - Vehicle operating: $29,800 - Transfers: $378,935
2013 OBJECTIVES: Goals for 2013 include continue working on the Runway 17/35 replacement and marketing the new runway.
