  •  Man shoots himself Christmas Eve

  • A Harvey County Deputy was checking on a suspicious vehicle at about 5 p.m. Monday located in the 600 block of Southeast 84th Road, one-half mile east of Kansas Ave.The vehicle was a pick-up parked in a field entrance. According to a news release, the Deputy approached the vehicle; he could see one white male occupant inside the vehicle. As the Deputy was approaching the suspect vehicle, he heard what he believed to be a single gunshot and saw the occupant “Slump over” in the seat.The deputy backed away from the vehicle and began giving commands for the suspect to exit the vehicle. The suspect acknowledged the deputies commands. The suspect refused to comply with the commands. Back-up officers from the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, Newton Police Department, Halstead Police Department, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol, as well as Newton Fire EMS responded to the scene.Following approximately an hour, the suspect left his vehicle with a handgun pointed at his chest. Officers gave the suspect numerous commands to drop his weapon. The suspect started to walk away from the officers, out into a field, turned and shot himself in the chest with a .45 caliber handgun. A snub- nosed revolver was also found in the suspect’s pocket. Officers did not fire any rounds at the suspect.
