Mathis claims national title
ROME, Ga. — Incoming Bethel College football coach Marty Mathis will bring a national championship ring with him. Mathis, who was named to the Bethel post Nov. 20, finished his tenure as defensive coordinator at Marian University Dec. 13 with a 30-27 overtime win against Morningside College in the NAIA Championship game in Rome. Marian trailed 14-10 at the half and 20-10 after three quarters, but came back in the fourth quarter, tying the game on a 35-yard Mike Josifvoski field goal as time expired. Josifvoski hit a 26-yard field goal in overtime to give Marian its first-ever national title. It was the first time the NAIA Championship game was decided in overtime Marian finished the season 12-1. Mathis takes over a Bethel program that was 0-10 last season. He succeeds Jim Dotson, who served last season on an interim basis when Travis Graber resigned before the start of pre-season practice.
