  • The Newton High School girls’ basketball team heads into the Christmas break with a win, stopping Campus 53-21 Tuesday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Ravenscroft Gym. “We played with a lot of intensity and purpose tonight,” Newton coach Randy Jordan said. “I feel like we can play with anybody when we play with a purpose. They were overplaying us on defense. We saw that and talked about it in a time out. Emily (Hiebert) is hard enough to guard, but we started getting her backcuts and she was able to get it to the basket. We were very unselfish tonight.” Abbie Lehman led the Railers with 15 points and seven blocked shots. Hiebert and Hannah Carlgren each added 10 points. Campus, 2-4 overall and 1-3 in AV-CTL I play, was led by Tabitha Wheeler and Kyra Ivy with six points each. Aided by five turnovers in 5 1/2 minutes of play, Newton jumped out to an 8-0 lead. After a Colt time out, Newton added six more points to the run. Kyra Ivy put Campus on the board with a three-point play with 33.9 seconds left in the period. Newton scored the first four points of the second quarter. Campus replied with a 9-1 run. Newton took a time out and scored a pair of layups off steals. A Taylor Stahly trey put Newton up by 13 with 27 seconds left in the half, but Bailey Clark answered with a short jumper at the other end to keep Campus within 11, 27-16. Newton was 12 of 29 shooting in the first half. Campus was seven of 24. The Railers made a 16-0 run in the third quarter, holding Campus to just four shots. Campus was outscored 10-5 in the fourth quarter. “You hold a team to five points in a half, that’s team effort,” Jordan said. “That’s not just one or two girls out there. That’s all of them playing defense. Abbie did a great job of playing helpside on defense.” Newton, 5-1 overall and 2-1 in AV-CTL I play, returns to action Jan. 4 at home against Derby. “We need the time off,” Jordan said. “Derby is very athletic. They have a very good guard who is hard to contain.”CAMPUS (2-4, 1-3 AV-CTL I) — Leeper 1 0-0 0, 2; Barnum 0 0-0 0, 0; Keck 0 1-2 0, 1; Bosley 1 0-0 2, 2; Yeager 0 0-0 0, 0; Wheeler 3 0-0 0, 6; Brown 0 0-0 0, 0; Ivy 1 (1) 1-1 1, 6; Zavala 0 0-0 0, 0; Clark 2 0-0 2, 4; TOTALS 8 (1) 2-3 5, 21.
