  • WICHITA — There was good news and bad news for the Newton High School wrestling team at Saturday’s Bishop Carroll Invitational. The Railers won the 12-team tournament, heading into the Christmas break undefeated as a team. Newton also claimed nine medals, putting six wrestlers in the finals. The bad news was finishing just 1-5 in those championship matches. Newton finished the tournament with 165.5 points, followed by Wichita Northwest at 124 and Andale at 122.5. Halstead-Sedgwick sent two wrestlers to the meet, finishing 12th with 27.5 points. Halstead-Sedgwick claimed one title. “We’ve got a pretty good group of kids,” Newton coach Jude Wilson said. “This is our last tournament before break, so we gear up for it. We didn’t come down here without taking our lumps. It exposed us in some places. We have plenty of places to improve. I didn’t see any real surprises. I saw some kids who got better from match to match, so that’s a positive. I saw some kids who had some matches, where we knew it was going to be tough, but we thought we had a chance of winning, but we didn’t get it done. You’re going to have those, but we have time to work on those things.” Dillon Archer claimed the Railers’ only title of the day, finishing unbeaten at 195 pounds. After a 3-2 win over Mike Shirk of Salina South in the semifinals, Archer faced Andale’s Derrick Gates in the finals. Archer scored an early takedown with backpoints, but got caught too high and was reversed. In the second period, Archer scored two near falls. He added a reversal and two near falls in the third for a 17-2 technical fall. “I just have to keep making improvements,” Archer said. “I have to use tournaments like these to grow from. That’s the first time I’ve wrestled him. It’s still early in the season, so there’s room for improvement. I feel like as a team, we’re doing well and as an individual I’m doing well, but there’s always places you can find to improve and get better.” “He did a great job,” Wilson said. “He dominated. He needs to find a way to open up. That’s something he’s going to have to work on.” In the finals at 120 pounds, Newton’s Quinton Harrison gave up a takedown late in the first period, a reversal and a penalty point for locked hands in the second against Andale’s Tyler Meis. Harrison did score an escape midway in the third period, falling 5-1. In the finals at 145 pounds, Garrett McEachern fell behind 5-2 to Campus’ Joe Thompson. McEachern scored an escape in the third period. He appeared to have a takedown just before the final buzzer, but the referee instead gave McEachern a penalty point for Thompson running off the mat, leaving McEachern a point short at 5-4. In the finals of 170 pounds, Newton’s Jared Langley met Mulvane’s Kolby Fennewald. After a scoreless first period, Langley was ridden out in the second period. Fennewald scored an escape in the third period and evaded several shots by Langley, holding on for a 1-0 win. At 220 pounds, Raymond Gallegos fell behind 5-0 to Caleb Franklin of Wichita North. Gallegos dropped the match 8-2. In the finals at heavyweight, Garrett Lee faced Josh Horn of Winfield. Lee gave up an escape early in the first period and a reversal early in the second. Lee dropped the match 8-1. “You have to win the tough matches, and we didn’t get it done in the final round,” Wilson said. “It’s hard to feel good about that. We knew we had a team that could come in and win it. We had some kids that got woken up. We’ll go back to work. We have a great group of kids, and we’ll get better by the end of the season.” Gabe Torres finished 3-1 at 126 pounds to take third. In the consolation finals, he scored an escape late in the third period for a 3-2 win over Gabe Pacha of Bishop Carroll. Haydon Mock finished third at 160 pounds at 4-1. In the consolation finals against Luke Sponsel of Bishop Carroll, Mock fell behind 2-1 in the first period. In the second period, Mock took Sponsel down and got the pin. Trevor Pryor placed fourth at 106 pounds. In the consolation finals, he was pinned in 37 seconds by Cody McCafferty of Campus, finishing the day 2-2. At 138 pounds, Earnest Johns finished 2-2. At 113 pounds, Eliseo Torres finished 1-2. At 132 pounds, Newton’s Andrew Gehring finished 0-2. At 152 pounds, John Jurardo finished 0-2. For Halstead-Sedgwick, Alex Thibault reached the finals at 152 pounds against Ortiz Saul of Wichita Northwest. After a scoreless first period. Thibalt scored an escape and a takedown in the second. He added a takedown in the third for a 5-1 decision. Thibault heads into the Christmas break unbeaten. “He’s strong like me,” Thibault said. “It’s nice to be able to compete with those guys. I should have opened up a little bit more.” It was Thibault’s third medal at the meet and first title. He didn’t compete last season. “I had some medical issues and I wasn’t able to go,” Thibault said. “This year, I want to wrestle well at every tournament. Hopefully, that will set me up for the state tournament, and I can make a run.” Nic Johnson finished 2-2 at 145 pounds, falling in the consolation semifinals.
