  • Newton girls win JV tourneyThe Newton High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team won the Newton JV Invitational Saturday at Ravenscroft and Willis gyms. In the semifinals, Newton downed Emporia 41-34. In the finals, Newton downed Maize 49-48. Goessel led 20-16 at the half, holding Wakefield to 11 points in the second half. Davis Cook scored 18 points for Goessel. The Bluebirds play today at home against Hope.Thunder wins two gamesNORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas — The Wichita Thunder won two games in weekend play. Saturday at home, Wichita downed Tulsa 5-2. Neal Trimm scored two goals with two assists. Dave Inman, Les Reaney and Kevin Young each scored a goal. Chad Painchaud and Ryan Flanigan each had two assists. Kevin Regan stopped 17 shots. Sunday on the road, Wichita downed Fort Worth 4-3 in an overtime shootout. Hanson Gregor, Todd Griffith and Young each had a goal for the Thunder. Wichita won the shootout 2-1. Hanson scored the game-winning shootout goal. Torrie Jung had 23 saves. Wichita is 17-7-2 and plays at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at Fort Worth. Young takes CHL honors — Young was named Central Hockey League player of the week for the week ending Sunday. In three games, Young scored three goals with an assists.Wings fall to RochesterROCHESTER, N. Y. — The Wichita Wings fell to the Rochester Lancers 5-4 Sunday in Rochester. Doug Miller scored two goals with an assist for Rochester. Mauricio Salles and Stephen Basso each scored two goals. Fredrico Moojen scored two goals for Wichita. Sanaldo had 13 saves in Wichita. Wichita hosts Missouri at 7:35 p.m. Friday.
