Newton grad 12th at nationals

HUTCHINSON � Newton High School graduate Tyler Rambo, a sophomore at Hutchinson Community College, placed 12th in the shot put at the National Junior College Athletic Association Track and Field Championships Friday at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson. Rambo had a best of 14.70 meters (48-2 3/4). After two days of competition, Hutchinson leads Iowa Central Community College 37-32. Competition continues today.

SALINA � The Newton High School girls' track team barely survived a challenge from Valley Center to claim the title of the Class 5A regionals Friday at Salina District Stadium. On the last event for the girls, the 4x400-meter relay, Newton could clinch the meet by finishing no worse than one spot behind Valley Center. State swimming to be netcast

The Kansas State High School Activities Association will webcast the Class 6A and 5-4-3-2-1A state swimming and diving championships today and Saturday. The webcasts are free and available at kshsaa.playonsports.com. Newton High School has 11 competitors in the Class 5-4-3-2-1A state swimming meet, which begins at 4 p.m. today. ANDOVER � The Newton High School softball team ended the season with an 8-3 loss to Arkansas City Wednesday in the semifinals of the Class 5A regionals in Andover. SALINA � It was a tight race for most of the afternoon at the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I Girls' Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday at the Salina South pool, but in the last five events, the Newton Railers were able to pull away for a comfortable win.
