While you’ll still be able to purchase paper copies of books at downtown bookstores, a few retailers also will be setting up “shelves” in cyberspace. Two local bookstores — Pages Books & Coffee and Faith & Life Bookstore in Newton — have announced plans to expand their offerings to include e-books and e-reading devices.Pages Books & CoffeePages Books & Coffee, 605 N. Main, has a partnership with the American Booksellers Association and will be offering e-books through Kobo. Pages also is a vendor of Kobo e-reading devices. Mollie Sultenfuss, co-owner of Pages Books & Coffee, recommends the Kobo “Glo” device. She said it has a touch screen and easy-to-use navigation features. You can make e-notes in your e-books, and you also can adjust the font size, which is especially helpful for those who have to use large print books. “For somebody who wants a dedicated reader, it’s a pretty solid device,” Sultenfuss said. Sultenfuss said the e-books can be downloaded through a computer or through the device’s built-in WiFi. The device can hold its charge for about a month, and it is designed to display text more like a printed book. “It does not feel like looking at a computer screen,” Sultenfuss said. Kobo also plans to release a device in the future that is similar to a mini tablet with a camera on it. You can sign up for a free Kobo e-book account via www.pagesnewton.com/ebooks, and download the app you need for the device you use. When you download Kobo books through Pages, 50 percent of your purchase will support local business. Sultenfuss said Kobo e-books can be used on almost any device, such as an iPad and other tablets, smartphones, Nook e-readers or Android-based devices (Note: The Kobo e-books are not compatible with Amazon’s Kindle). You can special order Kobo e-readers through Pages, and also try out a demo device at the store. Sultenfuss said there is a turn-around time of about a week for e-reader orders. If you still prefer paper books, you can order those online, as well, through www.pagesnewton.com. The books can be shipped directly to you, or shipped to the store for you to pick up. MYeebo offers a variety of downloadable Christian entertainment, including e-books, music, audiobooks/audio Bibles, video games, Bible software, and streaming rentals of movies, music videos and kids’ videos. The MYeebo brand consists of a website, apps for iOS (iPad and iPhone), Android tablets and Kindle Fire, and its own branded MYeebo Color Tablet. The myeebo.com website features a “magic shelf” that keeps the site user from having to scroll down the webpage but still able to view new releases, best sellers, value titles and featured titles such as Gold Medallion and Carol Fiction Award winners. Registered customers can be automatically logged back into the site through their Facebook or Twitter accounts. Comments on e-books and music albums can immediately be posted on the user’s Facebook page. The website also has the ability to know when it is on a mobile device so it can automatically render the look of the webpage so elements aren’t extremely small. ACM Digital has appointed Faith & Life Bookstore to cover Newton and surrounding areas as its retail affiliate. The store has an e-book introduction center with a demonstration MYeebo Color Tablet on a cable retractor for shoppers to play with. The tablet has an 8-inch touch screen, and its operating system is Android 4.1. More than a half-dozen of the most popular apps are preloaded, plus the ESV and KJV Bibles. A small selection of preloaded e-books and songs also are included. For more information, call Faith & Life Bookstore at 283-2210.
