HAYS — The Newton High School girls’ basketball team is off to the finals of the Hays City Shootout after a 43-31 win over host Hays Friday. Newton led 18-17 at the half and 27-24 after three quarters, putting the game away with a 16-8 fourth quarter. “In the first half, we started a little slow again,” Newton coach Randy Jordan said. “In the second half, I felt like we started to play a little bit harder, especially on defense. We worked the ball a little bit better. We got some nice looks. They played it in pretty tight against Abbie (Lehman). We hit some shots from the outside, and they had to come out and guard us. That opened things up on the inside.” Emily Hiebert and Lehman led the Railers with 11 points each. Kaitlyn Schumacher led Hays with nine points. “Our defense late in the first half, and into the second half, really sparked us,” Jordan said. “We took three charges, and could have had a fourth. Logan (Porter) took two.” Newton plays Kearney, Neb., at 5:30 p.m. today in the finals. “They are a lot like Hays,” Jordan said. “They are 5-10, 5-11 with a couple 5-9 guards. They are a lot like the teams we see every day in the Ark Valley Division I.”
