  • HAYS — The Newton High School boys’ basketball team let a 10-point lead in the second half slip away, falling to Hays 54-53 in overtime Friday in the semifinals of the Hays City Shootout. “Hays is a very good team,” Newton coach Don Cameron said. “They played very well. We missed some free throws late and had a turnover at a crucial time. They hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer to put the game into overtime. Last year, they beat us with a 3-point shot. We were 11 of 22 from the line, and we’re better free throw shooters than that. If we don’t turn the ball over, or if we hit free throws, we win the game.” Newton led 23-21 at the half, and 36-30 after three quarters. Austin Krogmeier led the Railers with 17 points. Brady Worth led Hays with 14 points, followed by Nick Pitts with 13 and Lane Clark with 12.
