  • HAYS — The Newton High School boys’ basketball team posted one of its most desicive wins in recent years, stopping Riley County 71-27 Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Hays City Shootout. The Railers led 21-7 after the first quarter and put things away with a 14-2 second quarter. Newton outscored the Falcons 21-6 from 3-point range. Jack Kingsley led Newton with 15 points, followed by Josh Carlgren with 12 and Gunar Drinnen with 10 points. Bryce Chavis led Riley County with 11 points. The Railers face host Hays at 8:30 p.m. today.
