Newton City Commissioners set the dates and times for fireworks sales and discharge for 2013, and there will be no change from 2012 guidelines. At their meeting Tuesday morning, commissioners voted to allow sales from June 29 (Saturday) to July 4 (Thursday) in 2013. Discharge will be allowed from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 29 through July 3. On July 4, sales will be allowed from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and discharge will be allowed from 7 a.m. to midnight. For 2012, the Newton City Commission discussed changing the time the sale and discharge of fireworks is allowed and tried to find a middle ground that would help both fireworks vendors and community members advocating for more restrictions. The commission thought an earlier sales deadline would prevent people from buying fireworks at midnight and continuing to discharge them throughout the night.Other businessAt the commission meeting Tuesday, commissioners also heard from Lunda Asmani, assistant city manager for budget and finance, about the publication of the city’s 2013 budget book. The book includes photos, graphs and information about the city’s budget for next year. Asmani said the document serves as a “road map” or financial plan for the city’s finances for 2013 and beyond, and it also describes what services different city departments provide. The budget book is available online at www.newtonkansas.com/index.aspx?page=490, and Asmani said copies also are being sent to the Newton Public Library for those who do not have Internet access.
