  • The Newton High School boys’ swimming team already has six entries qualified for state, and that after the first meet of the season. The Railers placed second Thursday at the Newton Invitational at the NHS pool. Derby downed Newton 313-280. Hutchinson was third at 207, followed by Campus at 173, Winfield at 153, McPherson at 97 and El Dorado at 65. “We got two of the relays qualified,” Newton coach Philip Schmidt said. “I know we got at least four individuals. Dylan Anderson just missed it in the 50 (yard freestyle). I was very pleased with how we started the season. The amount of times we dropped from our time trials, a week-and-a-half ago, were four, five, six seconds. We started better off than I’ve ever seen before.” The Railer coach credited the strong start to initiative taken by the swimmers before the season started. “They started practicing on their own before the season started,” Schmidt said. “That’s something I can’t have a part of. They got parents to help supervise them. A couple of times a week, they got in the water and swam. They decided to do something a little different. They put some extra time and effort in it. It really showed.” Schmidt said the team has good depth this year, which also aided in the Railer finish. “We have six new freshmen,” he said. “We have a number of sophomores who didn’t come out last year. We have a couple of juniors who didn’t come in last year. They will be really good contributors in their first year. I think we’re going to be taking quite a few to state this year.” Newton’s first state qualifier came in the first event. The 200-yard medley relay team of Aaron Clark, Jace Schmidt, Alex Trumble and Dylan Anderson took second in 1:53.27, breaking the qualifying mark of 1:58.86. The team of Anderson, Taylor Gonzales, Nathaniel Dick and Trumble won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:46.11, breaking the qualifying time of 3:51.49. Trumble won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:11.32, shattering the state qualifying mark of 2:24.09. Trumble took second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:09.69, breaking the state qualifying time of 5:55.02. Schmidt qualified for state in the 100-yard breaststroke, taking third in 1:09.43, breaking the required time of 1:12.65. Schmidt took third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.34, breaking the required mark of 1:04.06. Anderson took third in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.66, just shy of the qualifying mark of 24.14, and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle in 56.18, shy of the required mark of 54.22. Anderson broke the state consideration times in both events. The team of Moore, Taylor Gonzales, Preston Ford and Schmidt took fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:44.73, just shy of the required mark of 1:42.37, but hitting the state consideration time. Nathanial Dick took fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:14.25. Newton competes at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Maize Invitational at the Wichita Northwest YMCA. “This group of guys have been really good to work with,” Schmidt said. “They get along great. They are high school boys, so sometimes I have to crack the whip, but it’s been a pleasure this early in the season.”
