  •  Bethel men fall to Doane

  • HASTINGS, Neb. — For the second straight day, the Bethel College men’s basketball team went into halftime poised for a major upset, only to fall in the second half. The Threshers led unbeaten Doane College 32-31 at the half Saturday in the Hastings College Classic, but an 11-2 Doane run to start the second half led to an 81-63 loss for the Threshers. Bethel led by as many as nine in the first half. Bethel, 1-8, hit 40.6 percent from the field in the first half, but just 29.6 percent in the second (eight of 27). Bethel was outrebounded 43-33 for the game. After hitting just 11 of 28 in the first half, Doane went 19 of 33 in the second half. Doane, 9-0, was led by Connor Beranek with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Domonique Smith scored 17 points. Shavonte Samuels scored 15 points. Nick Reed scored 14 points with 10 rebounds. Bethel, 1-8, was led by Ronnie Hodge with 17 points. Adam Arciniega scored 12 points with 11 rebounds. Lee Griffin scored 10 points. Bethel opens Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play at 8 p.m. Thursday at Thresher Gym against 12th-ranked (NAIA Division II) University of Saint Mary. The Spires are 4-4, winning their last two games.
