  • Newton grad takes honorsHAYS — Newton High School graduate Kate Lehman was named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball player of the week for the week ending Sunday. Lehman, a sophomore post at Fort Hays State, led the Tigers to three wins last week — Newman 66-46, Arkansas Tech 81-52 and Texas-Permian Basin 63-43. Lehman had two double-doubles for the week — 22 points and 13 rebounds against Newman and 10 points with 13 rebounds against UTPB. She scored 16 points against Arkansas Tech with six rebounds. She blocked four shots in each game last week. For the season, she is averaging 17.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.3 blocked shots a game. It was the second time Lehman has been honored. Fort Hays State is 6-0 this season. The Tigers host Central Missouri Dec. 5 to open MIAA play.Berean grad tops KCACWICHITA — Berean Academy graduate Kayla Eilerts was named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the week for the week ending Sunday. Eilert is a 5-6 senior guard at Sterling College. She is from Whitewater. In a two-game road trip to Nebraska, Eilert scored 43 points with 21 rebounds, eight assists, seven steals and a blocked shot. She scored 20 points with 10 rebounds in a 79-62 win over York, and scored 23 points with 11 rebounds in an 83-61 loss to Hastings College.Thunder wins fourth straightWICHITA — The Wichita Thunder won its fourth straight game, stopping the Fort Worth Brahmas 5-4 Saturday in Central Hockey League play at Intrust Bank Arena. Wichita was led by Matt Summers with two goals and an assist. Greger Hansen and R.G. Flath each added a goal with an assist. Todd Griffith also scored a goal. Dave Inman, Jon Madden, Les Reaney, Kevin Young and Andrew Martins each had an assist for the Thunder. For Fort Worth, Riley Boychuk, Erik Spady, Ross Rouleau and Daniel Spivak each scored a goal. Thomas Klempa had three assists. T.J. Fox had two assists. Phil Fox, Nick Schneider and Derrick Pallis each had one assist. Wichita goalkeeper Torrie Jung stopped 19 of Fort Worth’s 23 shots. Fort Worth keeper Kristofer Westblom stopped 24 of 29 shots. Wichita improves to 10-5-2. Fort Worth falls to 6-7-2. Wichita faces CHL expansion team Denver for the first time at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Denver Coliseum. FLATH TAKES HONORS — Forward R.G. Flath was named the CHL player of the week for the week ending Sunday. Flath scored three goals with two assists for the week. Flath recorded his 100th professional assist Friday. He is six goals shy of 100 and five points shy of 200. THUNDER SIGNS GRIFFITH — The Thunder signed forward Todd Griffith Saturday. Griffith started the season with Toledo of the ECHL. He has 126 goals and 109 assists in 296 pro games. He has nine goals and nine assists in 32 playoff games. A seven-year pro, he has played with Texas (Fort Worth), Laredo and Missouri of the CHL. His best season was in 2006-07 with Bakersfield of the ECHL, when he scored 26 goals and 17 assists in 46 games.
