  • HESSTON — The Hesston College women’s basketball team struggled on offense in the second half, falling to Southeast (Neb.) Community College 78-64 Friday night in the Hesston College Thanksgiving Classic at Yost Center. Hesston, 5-4, shot just 33 percent in the second half, after shooting 12 of 28 in the first. Southeast, 7-2, hit 16 of 24 from the field and 12 of 16 from the line in the second half. “They were falling down and it would still go in,” Hesston coach Dan Harrison said. “We have a young team and we had some growing pains. We played some good basketball this season, and we’re going to continue to play some good basketball. Sometimes, when your young, you worry about what’s going wrong instead of fixing things. We’ll get that fixed and we’ll be all right.” Southeast was led by Destiny Whitehead with 20 points, Callie Percival with 17 and Olivia Moore with 14. For Hesston, Rachel Miller scored 19 points and Destiva Davis added 15. Hesston led by as many as nine in the first half, but gave up a 16-point run. The Larks got back into the game late in the first half. A Young 3-pointer in the final minute tied the game at the half, 33-33. Hesston trailed by as many as nine early in the second half. The Larks drew as close as two with 8:58 remaining in regulation. Southeast was able to pull away late. “With about five minutes remaining, I thought we had them,” Harrison said. “Then we went cold from the field, and they went on a run. We were pressing them, that’s our bread and butter, but we couldn’t get anything to go.” Hesston plays the Central Christian College junior varsity at 6 p.m. today. “We’ll regroup and try to play better tomorrow,” Harrison said. “They are not doing very well right now. We’ll get to play everybody. We have to get ready for Johnson County on Wednesday.” NOE-C 100, Central Christian JV 14 In the opening game of the classic, Northern Oklahoma-Enid downed the Central Christian junior varsity 100-14. The Jets led the junior Tigers 46-4 at the half. Marisha Wallace led NOC-E with 23 points, followed by Rani Melvin and Shannon Hough with 18 points each. Rylie Swanson scored 15 and Christa Beasler scored 10. Natalie Johnson led Central with seven points.SOUTHEAST (Neb.)
