  • Newton grad reaches NCAAINDIANAPOLIS — Newton High School grad Katie Loescher will play in the NCAA Division II volleyball tournament. Loescher is a freshman at Rockhurst University, which downed Lewis University in four sets Sunday to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference post-season tournament in Indianapolis. Rockhurst won the match 25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 25-21. Loescher had 11 kills, a dig and a downed block in the match. Rockhurst opened the tournament with a five-set win over Bellarmine. Loescher had 15 kills and four downed blocks in the match. The semifinals, Rockhurst stopped 19th-ranked Indianapolis in four sets. Loescher had 15 kills and six downed blocks. For the season, Loescher has started in all 34 matches for the Hawks, posting 376 kills with eight assists, a service ace, 88 digs and 57 total blocks. Loescher leads the Hawks in kills. The Hawks are 29-6, 14-4 in the GLVC West Division, taking second in the division. Rockhurst is on a 10-match winning streak. Rockhurst will meet Indianapolis Nov. 29 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament in Indianapolis.Hesston women fall to DodgeHESSTON — The Hesston College women’s basketball team fell to Dodge City Community College 82-77 Monday night at Yost Center. Hesston trailed 42-27 at the half, but outscored the Conquistadors 50-40 in the second half. Casey McCauley scored 22 points for Dodge City, followed by Jameeshia Armstrong with 13, Kelli Tolar with 12, Kesha Buckner with 11 and Nicole Salazar with 10. Destiva Davis scored 22 points for Hesston. Makayla Ladwig scored 14 and Rachel Miller scored 10. Hesston is 5-3 and hosts Southeast (Neb.) Ian Lowe scored the game winner for the Thunder with 10:26 remaining in regulation. Lowe scored a goal with an assist. Chad Painchaud added a goal with an assist. Greger Hanson scored a goal. Kellen Tochkin and Jeff Pierce each scored a goal for Missouri. Torris Jung stopped 24 of 26 shots in goal for Wichita. Mike Clemente had 22 saves for Misssouri. Wichita is 7-5-2, while Missouri is 4-7-2. Wichita hosts Bloomington at 7:05 p.m. today at Intrust Bank Arena. FOOD DRIVE FRIDAY — The Thunder will be hosting a food drive Friday before its game against Quad City. Fans who bring a canned good to the Intrust Bank Arena box office before the game can buy a second ticket for $5 with the purchase of a full-priced ticket, The food will be donated to the Kansas Food Bank.
