  • Bethel women fall to WPUAfter a strong start to the season, the Bethel College women’s basketball team has lost three straight, falling to William Penn University 79-48 Saturday in the final game of the Bethel Classic. William Penn led 36-25 at the half. Bethel shot just 27.9 percent for the game (17 of 61), hitting just five of 28 from the field in the second half. Bethel was outrebounded 46-39. William Penn hit 30 of 66 from the field. Orielle Thomas scored 15 points with 11 rebounds for the Statesmen, 3-4. Katie Golomski added 10 points. William Penn snaps a three-game losing streak. Bethel was led by Lauren Ulrich with 10 points. Kendra Scott scored nine points with 10 rebounds. Bethel, 3-4, plays at 5:30 p.m. today at NAIA Division I Graceland in Lamoni, Iowa. In the other game of the classic, McPherson College finished the Classic 2-0 after a 67-64 win over Haskell Indian Nations. McPherson, 4-3, was led by Brittany Pittas with 18 points, followed by Ali Brewster with 15 and Kaylee Cramer with 14. Bethel trailed 36-28 at the half, but hit just nine of 24 from the field in the second half. The Ravens, 5-1, hit 14 of 25 in the second half to pull away. Bethel was outrebounded 41-23 T.J. Stevens led Benedictine with 18 points. Charlie Wallrapp scored 17 points with 10 rebounds. Luke Norville scored 14 points. Jonathan Anaekwe scored 10 points. Bethel was led by Lee Griffin with 16 points. Ronnie Hodge scored 13 points. The Threshers fall to 1-5 and face Central Christian College at 7:30 p.m. today in McPherson. The players will teach shooting and fundamentals. Meet the Railers Night will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Ravenscroft Gym.Newton grad reaches NCAAINDIANAPOLIS — Newton High School grad Katie Loescher will play in the NCAA Division II volleyball tournament. Loescher is a freshman at Rockhurst University, which downed Lewis University in four sets Sunday to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference post-season tournament in Indianapolis. Rockhurst won the match 25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 25-21. Loescher had 11 kills, a dig and a downed block in the match. Rockhurst opened the tournament with a five-set win over Bellarmine. Loescher had 15 kills and four downed blocks in the match. The semifinals, Rockhurst stopped 19th-ranked Indianapolis in four sets. Loescher had 15 kills and six downed blocks. For the season, Loescher has started in all 34 matches for the Hawks, posting 376 kills with eight assists, a service ace, 88 digs and 57 total blocks. Loescher leads the Hawks in kills. The Hawks are 29-6, 14-4 in the GLVC West Division, taking second in the division. Rockhurst is on a 10-match winning streak. Rockhust will meet Indianapolis Nov. 29 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament in Indianapolis.
