WHAT: The estimated cost for the city of Newton’s proposed U.S. 50 and K-15 interchange: off ramp — right turn lanes project. The city estimates the Kansas Department of Transportation will fund a majority of the cost.
WHERE: The city reports that due to increase traffic on both K-15 and U.S. 50 highways, drivers are experiencing delays on the U.S. 50 off-ramps while trying to enter K-15.
WHEN: The project is proposed for 2014.
WHY: The city’s capital improvement plan states Newton is projected to continue growing on the south end of town, south of U.S. 50, as more residential subdivisions develop to support the planned industrial expansion at the Kansas Logistics Park, and the urban sprawl toward Wichita. The city anticipates this growth will increase traffic problems at the interchange referenced above.
HOW: Reconstruction of the exit ramps will include a right turn lane to separate traffic and to aid in overall traffic flow.
