Arthur L. Garver, 96, of Herington, died Tuesday, November 13th, 2012, at the Salina Regional Health Center. He was born on December 14, 1915, at Caldwell, Kansas, the son of Edward H and Olive (Rains) Garver. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, November 19th, 2012, at the First Christian Church in Herington, with Pastor Shawn Baird officiating; and burial will follow at the Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home & Crematory, Herington Chapel. Mr. Garver was a Rock Island Railroad Conductor from 1943 to 1976, when he retired in June of 1976. He was a member of the First Christian Church. He was a member of the Herington Kiwanis Club, and served as president 1983-84. He also served on the Herington Country Club Board of Directors for many years. He graduated from Caldwell High School with the class of 1933. He moved to Herington from Caldwell in 1943. He married Thelma Stookey on April 24, 1937, at Bartlesville, Okla.; she preceded him in death on January 13, 1997. Also preceded in death by his son, Byron Garver on June 20, 2009; and his brother, John Garver. He is survived by his son, Dale Garver (wife-Janice), and his daughter, Sheila Kern-Schmidt (husband-Archie), both of Newton; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Garver of Oklahoma City; nine grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
