WHAT: The estimated cost for the city of Newton’s proposed bike path extension. The project consists of the construction of a 10-feet wide, 5-inches thick, 6,500 foot long concrete pathway.
WHERE: The path will follow along the west side of Spencer and the north side of Southeast 36th, connecting to the bridge over I-135. The pathway will be marked as a bike path facility that is shared with pedestrians.
WHEN: The project is proposed for 2019.
WHY: The city’s capital plan states extending the pathway provides for a separation of bicycle and pedestrian traffic from industrial vehicle traffic along Spencer. The pathway also could tie into a future YMCA or other recreational facility in the future.
HOW: City staff said they plan to pursue grant opportunities when available for funding.
