  •  On September 25, Parents As Teachers hosted a Parent-Child Activity Night at Newton Fire Station #2 on East Third Street that we called “Dads, Donuts and Firetrucks”. We were thrilled to have a wonderful showing of families and children with over 120 attending. We are grateful to the Newton Kansan for their support with coverage both prior to the event and following it. Believe me, in this world of shrinking budgets for schools there are not funds to advertise any other way. A special thanks goes to Chad Frey who saw to it that this was covered! We also need to express our thanks to Steve Roberson, Battalion Chief and his crew who ably conducted the tour of the building and showed the families the impressive ladder truck and allowed the children to climb in a real fire truck and ambulance. In addition we thank the North Dillon’s store for their generous gift card that we used to purchase the donuts from the bakery there. In a community, when we can support one another, we all benefit. On this evening, numerous young children had a very special time, with their parents or guardians and with some of Newton’s finest fire safety providers. Some can not yet put into words the fun they had or tell what they learned. Others have not stopped talking about their new experience. We do know there was valuable learning taking place. They saw a fire fighter with all their gear on. They were told to crawl low when there is smoke and never to hide under a bed or in a closet. Little ones have minds that soak up much of what they hear! We know you had an impact on them.Thank you again Newton Kansan, Dillons and the Newton Fire Department.Donna Anderson, Parent Educator, Cooper Early Education Center
