In an effort to welcome changes fall brings, Dyck Arboretum is hosting a Prairie Pumpkin Festival on from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 26 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 27 This new event will combine a family-friendly pumpkin patch atmosphere and hands-on learning experiences around an old-time harvest celebration theme.
The festival will feature various fall-themed activities, such as arts and crafts, food vendors, a pumpkin decoration contest, and a pumpkin/hedgeapple launcher. Kids can participate in barrel train and hayrack rides, a petting zoo, face painting and a hay bale maze. Children and adults alike are welcome to decorate a pumpkin and compete for prizes. They can display their own pumpkin from home or choose from an assortment of pumpkins for sale at the arboretum.
Admission costs, good for both days, are $6 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and $3 for children ages 3 to 15 years old. Members of the arboretum will enjoy a $1 per person discount on admission. Admission fees cover participation in a variety of activities. The purchase of pumpkins, the barrel train, the hedgeapple/pumpkin launcher and purchase of items from vendors are not included.
Volunteers will be needed to help and will receive free admission. Please contact the arboretum at (620) 327-8127 for information on volunteering, or for a vendor application.
