LINDSBORG — The Halstead boys took second and the girls were fifth Thursday at the Central Kansas League Cross Country Championships at the Lindsborg Golf Course. The Hesston boys edged Halstead 20-54 for the team title. Pratt took third. Haven downed Pratt 40-41 for the girls’ team title. The Hesston girls took third “It was the first time that Halstead had ever run on the course,” Halstead coach Curtis Vermillion said. “The course provided a nice rolling terrain, with a couple of challenging hills for the runners to showcase their abilities. As in past years, the CKL cross country was a tough meet — great competition. There were some excellent individual and team performances at this meet. This atmosphere should get everyone in the right frame of mind for the regional meet next week. It was a great day for a cross country meet. Temperatures were in the mid 70’s, with a slight breeze. The meet was also the first CKL meet for middle school runners.” The Halstead boys claimed three medals — Adan Andrade in eighth at 18:57.81 (5,000 meters), a junior boy school course record; Blake Foster in 10th in 19:19.50, a senior boy school course record; and Darien Dawson in 13th in 19:25.32, a freshman boy school course record. The sole varsity medal for the Halstead girls went to Hannah Robinson in 11th in 17:49.80 (4,000 meters), a senior girl school course record. “Overall, most of our runners ran well,” Vermillion said. “The course was not an easy course, yet we competed well. The high school boys stepped up and ran well as a team to place second. We hope to use that momentum going into regional.” Halstead competes at the Class 3A regionals Oct. 20 at Southeast of Saline High School in Gypsum. The girls run at 11 a.m., followed by the boys at 11:30 a.m. “This regional meet may possibly be the most competitive 3A regional in the state, with several area teams ranked and many schools capable of placing in the top three,” Vermillion said.Central Kansas League Championships Thursday Lindsborg GC Halstead results m-medalists GIRLS Team scores — Haven 40, Pratt 41, Hesston 65, Smoky Valley 93, Halstead 115.
