The struggles continue for the Newton Rebels after a 9-6 loss to the North Central Knights Tuesday in Walter Johnson League play at Klein-Scott Field.

The loss was the first of the season to the Knights after winning the first three meetings. Newton falls to 10-7, 9-7 in WJL play. The loss was Newton's fourth straight and the first by more than one run.

LAWRENCE (AP) — The University of Kansas has approved a deal for television rights to its athletic events that will vastly expand coverage and access to Jayhawks sports across Kansas and nationwide, according to officials involved in the deal.

WICHITA — The Wichita Wingnuts lost both ends of a day-night doubleheader Tuesday against the Gary SouthShore Railcats in American Association play at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Wichita lost the first game 7-6 and the second game 7-4 in 11 innings.

In the nightcap, Wichita took a 4-3 lead after seven innings. Gary tied the game in the eighth. Mike Massaro hit a two-run triple for Gary in the 11th. Massaro scored on a wild pitch.

Football team

to have car wash

The Newton High School football parents group will have a fund-raising car wash from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the AutoZone and Walgreens in Newton.

Proceeds benefit the NHS football team. The car wash is by donation only.

The Newton Rebels struggled with offense during the weekend, leading to a pair of losses to the Valley Center Diamond Dawgs in Walter Johnson League play Saturday and Sunday at Klein-Scott Field.

Saturday, Newton fell 4-3. Sunday, Newton was held to two hits in a 3-2 loss in 10 innings.

The losses drop Newton to 10-6, 9-6 in WJL play. The Rebels have dropped three in a row. All six Newton losses were by one run.

Parel pulls away for win

WICHITA — With a one-hole lead and nine holes to play, Scott Parel was able to pull away to win the Air Capital Classic Sunday at the Crestview Country Club in Wichita.

Parel shot a 64 on his final round for a four-day total of 266, 18-under par.

In the final round, Parel fired a birdie on 13 and hit a 45-foot eagle putt on 14. He finished with a birdie on 15.

OMAHA, Neb. — For the first time in the franchise history, the Wichita Wild are playing for a league playoff championship.

Wichita edged the Omaha Beef 31-25 in the semifinals of the Champions Professional Indoor Football League playoffs at the Ralston Arena in Omaha.

SALINA — The Newton Junior Knights split a doubleheader against the Salina Hawks Friday in Class A American Legion baseball play at Dean Evans Stadium.

Newton won the first game 20-4 in four innings on the 10-run rule, but lost the second game 18-13. The second game clocked in at just over three hours.

In the first game, Newton scored five runs in the second, six runs in the third and nine runs in the fourth.

TOPEKA — Jake Wodtke and Ryan Ihle hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Topeka Golden Giants to a 7-6 win over the Newton Rebels Friday in Walter Johnson League play at Lake Shawnee Park in Topeka.

Newton jumped to a 4-1 lead through 4 1/2 innings, but gave up four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Tyler takes top spot at Air Cap Classic

WICHITA — Just nine strokes separate the second-day leader of the Air Capital Classic and those who just made the cut.

Nathan Tyler of Tucson, Ariz., shot a 65 Friday for a 10-under par 132 after two days of play. Tyler leads Thursday's first-round leader Alex Prugh and Jace Long of Dixon, Mo., by two strokes.

Six players are tied for fourth at 135. The cut (top 60 and ties) for the tournament was 141.

The Newton Senior Knights struggled with offense Wednesday, dropping a pair of games to Wichita East at Klein-Scott Field.

Newton lost the first game 5-3 and the second game 9-3.

Newton was held to two hits in the first game. East scored a run in the top of the fourth inning and added four runs in the sixth. Newton scored two runs in the sixth innings and one in the seventh.

The Newton Rebels got back on the winning side of the slate Thursday night with a 10-4 win over the Hutchinson Monarchs in Walter Johnson League at Klein-Scott Field.

The Rebels took a 7-3 lead through the first three innings and pulled away with two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.

WICHITA — Alex Prugh of Spokane, Wash., played a bogey-free round to finish with an eight-under par 63 and take a two-stroke lead in the first round of the Air Capital Classic Thursday at the Crestview Country Club in Wichita. Prugh had birdies on hole three, six, seven, 14, 15 and 16. He finished the round with an eagle three on 18.
