  • Railer golfers head to stateSALINA — The Newton High School girls’ golf team is off to the Class 5A state tournament after winning the regional tournament Monday at the Salina Municipal Golf Course. Newton edged Salina Central for the team title 386-387. Hays took third at 390, followed by Great Bend at 413, Maize South at 417, Salina South at 426 and Valley Center at 471. The top three teams advance to state. “The morning was very cold and windy with wind chills in the 30s when we teed off,” Newton coach Joanie Pauls said. “All the teams struggled early in the round. The girls were all mentally strong during the early part of the round and we took an early team lead.” Alissa Kim of Salina Central was top medalist at 80, followed by Laine Evans of Maize South at 82 and Taylor Knoth of Salina Central at 89. Newton claimed three medals — Alexa Salsbery in sixth at 92, Ginny Loeffler in seventh at 93 and Lexi Pauls in ninth at 95. “Alexa and Ginny both shot 50 on the front nine,” Joanie Pauls said. “They played much better on the back. Alexa was able to par 17 and 18 and won her first playoff hole to take fifth place. Ginny had birdies on eight and 10 that turned her round around allowing to medal in seventh. This is her lowest 18-hole of the season by six strokes. Lexi had our best score on the front with a 47. She continued to play well tee to green on the back, but her putting gave her some problems. She finished 10th after losing a playoff when her par putt on two lipped out. Alyssa played well on the front going out in 50, she had some ball striking problems on the back, but her chipping helped keep her going.” Alyssa Saenz was 17th at 106, followed by Larrah Bills in 29th at 119 and Emily Epp in 30th at 119. “Emily and Larrah both fought through some difficult playing conditions and were able to improve their scores on the back nine,” Joanie Pauls said. “We’ve been working hard on our chipping and it was one of our strengths on the day.” The state meet is Monday at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course.Class 5A Regionals Monday Salina Municipal GC Team scores (top three to state) — Newton 386, Salina Central 387, Hays 390, Great Bend 413, Maize South 417, Salina South 426, Valley Center 471.
