  •  One person lost their life, and two others were taken to the hospital, following a train/car accident Saturday.Taylor Sowell, 19, was killed when the car she was driving was hit by a BNSF freight train at just after noon Saturday on 48th St.Her husband, Dylan Sowell, 20, was critically injured and airlifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Her brother, Kyle Malek, 17, was taken to Wesley Medical Center by ambulance with head injuries."The train was eastbound at about 50 miles an hour," said Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton. "This is an odd crossing, it is elevated up off the road. The only warning they would have had was the horn on the train."There are no crossing arms or lights at the intersection, which sits just off of U.S. 50.Walton said Taylor Sowell suffered "massive head injuries."It is the second train accident at an uncontrolled intersection with the past few months — in the southern half of the county a train collided with a swather. In that accident, the driver of the swather survived."All of these crossings, just stop and look," Walton said. "You cannot beat the trains."The sheriff's office was assisted by Kansas Highway Patril, Newton Police, Walton Fire, Newton Fire/EMS and LifeTeam.
