  • VALLEY CENTER — The Newton High School girls’ tennis team is sending half its squad to the state tournament, following a third-place team finish at the Class 5A regionals Saturday in Valley Center. Maize South and Great Bend tied with 18 points. Maize South took the tie-breaker for the regional title. Newton was third at nine, followed by host Valley Center in fourth at seven. Hays was eighth, followed by Godddard Eisenhower and Goddard. Newton was led by the doubles team of junior Hannah Carlgren and sophomore Savannah Sailors, who won the title. Carlgren and Sailors went 4-0, stopping top-seeded Brianna Schartz and Jamie McVay of Great Bend 6-0, 7-5. Carlgren and Sailors reach state competition 8-4. “(I’m) almost in awe of these two today,” Newton coach Nick Sisson said. “They just started playing doubles together a week ago, and we saw something special then. With some good practices this week and a couple tough losses at league, they had all the motivation they needed to take the title. “A week ago, they lost to Great Bend, badly, at the McPherson meet. They met that same team in the finals today and steamrolled them 6-0, 7-5. That team from Great Bend are two very good doubles players, and yet they didn’t know what hit them. Savannah played great defense and came up with some big returns at key moments, truly demonstrating how much she’s grown, and Hannah was incredible, she had over two dozen winners and the other team had absolutely no idea how to stop her. I’m very excited for these two to show the state what they can do when we compete next weekend in Topeka.” Sophomore Serena Wong placed sixth in singles, finishing 2-2. Wong reaches state competition 5-7. “I’m so proud of Serena,” Sisson said. “She had all coaches asking, ‘who is that girl and where has she been all season?’ today. She played very well and this will be her first trip to State competition. With some confidence, her game jumps up serveral levels against anyone she encounters. She will only get better from here.” Newton’s Lauren Mellinger lost in the first round of singles to Shelby Dinkel of Hays 6-2, 6-2; ending the season 7-17. Newton’s doubles team of Stephanie Brown and Kate Jolliff lost in the first round to Megan Bird and Janae Gagnon of Hays 6-1, 7-5, ending the season 5-13. The state tournament is Friday and Saturday at the Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.Class 5A Regionals Saturday at Valley Center Team scores — Maize South 18 (tie-breaker: four state qualifiers), Great Bend 18 (three qualifiers), Newton 9, Valley Center 7, Hays 5, Godddard Eisenhower 1, Goddard 0.
