  •  Railer gymnasts third at home meet

  • The Newton High School gymnastics team continues to raise its scores, taking third Saturday at the six-team Newton Invitational. Lawrence Free State won the meet with a team score of 101.5, followed by Lawrence at 93.35 and Newton with a season-high 91.25. Olathe South was fourth, followed by Emporia and Olathe North. “We scored our season high with 91.25 to place third in the six-team invitational,” Newton coach JoAnne Thaw said. “It was an exciting day as we went from event to event because several girls had new things to try to improve their routines. It worked for some helped our team reach their season high.” Lawrence Free State’s Gracie Bartle won the all-around title at 34.35, followed by teammate Carrie Howland in second at 34.05 and Lawrence’s Jessie Abernathey in third at 33.1. Bartle won the uneven parallel bars at 8.7. Howland won the vault at 9.2, the balance beam at 8.9 and tied for first in the floor exercises with Abernathey at 8.6. Newton claimed two medalists. Anna Casper finished tied for sixth in all-around at 31.7, and took fourth in the uneven parallel bars at 7.65. Alexandra Glann finished sixth in the floor exercises at 8.15. Glann and Emily Kuhn scored season highs on the balance beam at 7.25 each. Glann, Casper and Epp each had season highs on the floor exercises at 8.15, 7.95 and 7.75 respectively.
