  • The Newton High School football team couldn’t find a way to solve Salina South’s offense or defense, falling 40-10 Friday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at Fischer Field. South improves to 5-1, 4-1 in AV-CTL I play. Newton falls to 2-4, 1-4 to end division play. “They’re a legitimate state championship contender,” Newton coach Brent Glann said. “That’s an outstanding team. We didn’t have a great week of practice, but most of this was due to the fact they are that good. We tried about everything we could to block them on offense. We could not move the ball. On defense, they have so many weapons. They are so fast, so big and so talented. They are the full package.” South running back Cody Busby rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns. He added a punt return for a third. Mike Jones added 121 yards and a touchdown. Justin Stonebreaker threw for 124 yards and two touchdowns, both to Zach Nachbar. For Newton, Derrick Garnica rushed for 47 yards. Coleman Kingsley rushed for 35 yards and passed for 95 yards with a touchdown. South had long drives on its first two possessions — the first ending on a 20-yard Busby run, the second ended on a 31-yard pass from Stonebreaker to Zach Nachbar. Newton’s defense stopped the Cougars on South’s third possession. South scored early in the second quarter on an 84-yard run by Jones. Busby followed with a 645-yard punt return and a 39-yard run. Newton was getting good field position on several long Bradley Million kick returns. Million ended the game with 38 yards rushing in the fourth quarter and 160 yards in kickoff returns. The Railers moved the ball in spurts, but was unable to sustain drives. “When we did get stops on them, we could not move the ball on offense,” Glann said. “We had some passes that we couldn’t connect on. We put Bradley in last week, and he did well. He showed he earned his spot.” A Newton drive aided by 30 yards in penalties ended with a 31-yard Braxton Stahl field goal with 15.9 seconds remaining in the half. Jones had a 53-yard kickoff return, setting South in Newton territory with four seconds left in the half, but a Hail Mary pass was broken up. Newton went three-and-out to start the second half. South got a 40-yard Busby punt return, but was unable to move the ball. Cameron Weishaar missed a 31-yard field goal attempt. South, aided by a Newton personal foul penalty, scored on a 22-yard pass from Stonebreaker to Nachbar late in the third quarter. Newton finally found the endzone when Coleman Kingsley hit a 61-yard pass to Jordan Johnson with 5:34 remaining. The play was set up by a South turnover. Newton got the ball back deep in South territory, but fumbled the ball back. Newton opens district play at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Emporia. The Spartans are 5-1 after a 40-26 loss to Topeka High. “They’re also a team with high aspirations,” Glann said. “We’ll watch them on film. We’ll see what we can come up with. I know our guys will want to have a great effort next week.”S.South 14 19 7 0 —40 Newton 0 3 0 7 —10 Scoring 1q. SS Busby 20-yd. run (Weishaar kick) 10:08 1q.
