  • PRATT — The Hesston Swathers were able to take some good shots from the Pratt High School Greenbacks Friday night at Zerger Field. Not only that, they showed the ability to keep their poise and turn the tables on PHS whenever the Greenbacks made a play that seemed to change the momentum. Hesston claimed a 35-19 win over Pratt Friday night in Central Kansas League play. Hesston improves to 3-3, 3-1 in South Division play. Pratt falls to 3-3, 2-2 in the division. Pratt got on the scoreboard first at 3:33 of the first quarter on an Anthony Cannata plunge. Pratt had recovered a Hesston fumble giving them a short field, and a reverse play put the ball in scoring position. The PAT failed, but Pratt seemed to have seized control of the game at 6-0. Seven seconds later, the Swathers Ryan Schadler shook loose for a 62-yard touchdown run to regain the momentum and a 7-6 lead. The Greenbacks gave Hesston a short field with a poor punt on their next possession. The Swathers expressed their appreciation with a scoring drive capped by a John Birch four-yard touchdown plunge. To start the second quarter, Pratt went three-and-out. Hesston got the ball at midfield and put together an impressive drive, with a mix of runs and passes. Schadler finished it off with a four-yard scamper to put the Swathers up 21-6. The teams then went toe to toe in the middle of the field for a few possessions each, both defenses putting the clamps on the opposition As the clock ticked away in the first half, the Greenback D got Hesston’s offense moving backwards and eventually Weston Riner hopped on a Swather fumble on the seven-yard line. Skylar Dean took it in from four-yards. The PAT attempt failed. Hesston got the ball into field goal range before time expired, but the attempt sailed wide left as time expired. The third quarter was mostly uneventful as neither team could mount much offense. One exception was a long Mitchell Baird run off a trick play that took the ball to the Swather 15. Hesston held Pratt on downs at that point. On Hesston’s initial possession of the final period, Robby Eggleston scooped up a Hesston fumble and returned it for a score. The Cesar Regalado PAT got the Greenbacks within two at 21-19 with 10 minutes left to play. The Pratt D seemed to have put up a stop and were on the verge of getting the ball back when a long pass play on third-and-long let Hesston keep the ball. Schadler scored from 27 yards out on the next play to make it 28-19 with 8:30 left. Hesston would get the ball again and with two minutes remaining. Schadler drove in the final nail with yet another touchdown run.
