HILLSBORO — Bertha (Unruh) Goentzel, 94, died on Monday (Oct. 1, 2012) at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro.She was born on Nov. 18, 1917, to Jacob and Helena (Smith) Unruh near Durham. She married Clarence Goentzel on Aug. 21, 1940, and they lived and farmed in the Marion and Lehigh communities until moving to Lehigh in 1964. She spent the last five years of her life at Parkside Assisted Living in Hillsboro.Bertha was a homemaker in addition to working for Meadowlark in Newton, Ratzlaff Drapery in Goessel, Parkside Homes and Salem Hospital in Hillsboro. She loved to quilt, garden, read and travel. She made many comforters to donate to Mennonite Central Committee. And, she is fondly remembered for all of the wonderful meals she hosted in her home for family and friends, which were often times followed by a time of playing table games and doing jigsaw puzzles.Bertha is survived by her sister, Ellagene Buller of Covina, Calif.; two daughters, Sharon (James) Bartel of Hillsboro and Carmen (Darrel) Schmidt of Newton; five sons, James (Marcia) of Wichita, Richard of Geuda Springs, Quinton (Linda) of Chugiak, Alaska, Howard (Linda) of Palmer, Alaska, and Douglas (Patsy) of Anchorage, Alaska; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Edwin Unruh, Roland Unruh, Walter Unruh and Dewey Unruh; three sisters, Selma Frantz, Lorena Reiss and Evangeline Schmidt; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Goentzel.Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. today (Oct. 6, 2012) at Lehigh Cemetery in rural Lehigh, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro.Memorials are suggested for Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church or Mennonite Central Committee, in care of Jost Funeral Home.
