OLATHE — The Newton High School gymnastics team competed at two recent meets.?Sept. 22 at the Lawrence Free State Invitational, the Railers were third out of four teams at 86.05.?“Our vault and floor improved getting us back to 86 points,” Newton coach JoAnne Thaw said.?On vault, Anna Casper had a season-high 8.4. Emmaleah Smet scored a season-high 7.9. Macy Simmons scored a 7.9. Emily Kuhn scored a 7.8.?On the uneven parallel bars, Casper and Naomi Epp each scored a 6.5, followed by Smet at 6.1, a season high, Simmons at 4.75 and Kuhn at 4.4.?On the balance beam, Casper took sixth at 7.5, followed by Smet at 6.1, Alexandra Glann at 6.2, Deanna Opland at 5.8 and Epp at 5.3. Glann and Smet each had season highs.?On the floor exercises, Glann scored a 7.95, followed by Casper at 7.7, Epp at 7.1, Simmons at 7.0 and Opland at 6.9. Glann, Casper, Epp and Simmoms all had season highs.?Casper scored a fifth-place 30.1 in all-around.?Sept. 25 at the Olathe North Invitational, Newton scored a season-high 89.35 for third place, Shawnee Mission East won at 97.25, followed by Olathe South at 93.8875.?“Vault and bars were our strengths this meet with all four competitors on the vault scoring a season high,” Thaw said.?On vault, Casper scored an 8.8, followed by Kuhn at 8.65, Smet at 8.35 and Simmons at 8.2. On the bars, Casper was second with a season-high 7.875. Smet scored a season-high 6.735. Simmons and Epp each scored a 6.3875. Kuhn scored a 4.2625.?On the beam, Casper was fourth at 7.6, followed by Smet with a season-high 6.7, Glann with a season-high 6.25, Opland with a 6.2, Epp with a 5.9 and Kuhn with a season-high 5.9.?On floor exercises, Glann scored a 7.6, followed by Casper at 7.2, Epp with a season-high 7.2, Smet at 6.3, Simmons at 6.2 and Opland at 6.9.?Caspar had a season-high all-around of 31.475 to take sixth. Smet had a season-high all-around of 28.05.?Newton hosts the Newton Invitational at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ravenscroft Gym with Emporia, Lawrence, Lawrence Free State, Olathe North and Olathe South.
