  • MAIZE — The Newton High School boys’ soccer team had Maize under control for most of the 92 minutes played Tuesday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play at the Maize field.?The 93rd minute proved to be the Railers’ undoing. Caleb Wilcox knocked in a crossing pass from Jose Diaz to give Maize a 1-0 overtime win.?Maize improves to 6-4-1, 3-2 in AV-CTL I play. Newton falls to 7-6, 1-3 in league play.?“We came out strong,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “We put things together early. We created opportunities right away. We had opportunities on goal that we just didn’t put in the back of the net. We had three really good opportunities — one the keeper got a deflection on, the other two were headers. We have to be able to finish. We’ve been in this situation against Maize before. We just had a mental breakdown, and they took advantage. I’m proud of the way the guys worked. It was a very tough game.”?Newton was outshot 14-5, 10-1 in the second half and overtime. Nat Dick had 11 saves in goal for Newton. Jeff White had three saves for Maize.?“The defense played well,” Jantzi said. “There were a couple of times where we left the flanks uncovered. On that last play, their flank was able to get a cross in. They really put a lot of pressure on us in the second half and two overtimes. We have to be able to step it up a gear.”?There were 32 fouls called, 14 against Newton.?The first half was played near even in terms of possession. Total shots were even at four each.?Maize controlled possession much of the second half, holding a 5-0 advantage in shots. Both teams had ample scoring chances in the half on breakaways.?Maize missed several chances early in the first half of overtime, including a shot that went off the bottom of the crossbar and was kicked out by the Railer defense.?Newton had a direct kick chance with 1:11 remaining in the period that went over the crossbar.?Newton hosts Hutchinson at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.?“We have another tough one against Hutchinson Thursday,” Jantzi said. “It’s senior night. We’ll go back to work tomorrow and work on a game plan. We’ll see what happens on Thursday.”??Newton 0 0 (0-0) —0?Maize 0 0 (0-1) —1?1.
