MOUNDRIDGE — Two teams wanting their first win met in Moundridge Friday night. Both wanted to win desperately, and both wanted to run the ball. Both put up mighty efforts — but in the end Moundridge was the lone winner as they dispatched Remington 35-26.
"This was a tough battle," said Moundridge coach Courtney Moddlemog. "For two 0-4 football teams, this was a good game and a tough game."
Both clubs had a pair of 100 yard rushers as they battled it out on the ground.
Daniel Ratzlaff led the Wildcats to a win with 150 yards rushing. Moundridge quarterback
Justin Higgins put 125 yards rushing on the board. Moundridge was able to get big plays when they needed them — including a pair of more than 50-yard runs for touchdowns from Ratzlaff and a 70-yarder from Higgins. "The last two weeks we made some changes to our offense," Moddlemog said. "I think we have the right quarterback running the offense now, and we are just clicking."
Moundridge started breaking the game open in the second quarter, using a pair of long touchdowns to build a 20-14 lead. A pair of touchdowns in the third put the Wildcats up 35-14 and seemingly in control of the game.
However the Broncos were not quite done. Senior Kyle Regier ran for a touchdown, and after Remington recovered an onside kick he threw a touchdown pass as well —pulling Remington to within nine points.
Remington tried another onside kick with just under five minutes to play — but Moundridge's Brandon Johnson put the final nail in the coffin by not only recovering the kick, but returning it to the Remington five yard line.
For Remington, senior Kyle Regier put together quite a night in a losing effort. He not only ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns, but also dropped back to pass six times and threw a touchdown pass. Eili Igo posted 154 yards rushing for Remington.
Next up for Moundridge is a trip to Sedgwick. Remington will travel to Hillsboro.
